Reddit user “EvilEnglish” had a great relationship with his grandparents he lovingly referred to as PopPop and Nana. He remembers his grandmother reading him Treasure Island as a kid, sparking a lifelong desire to find a secret fortune of his own someday.
After PopPop and Nana passed away, they left their farmhouse in Tennessee to their beloved grandson. When he went to the house to clean it up before they put it on sale, he noticed a very dirty carpet.
He decided to get rid of the musty old rug, but when he lifted it up to throw it away, he made a once-in-a-lifetime discovery — a hidden safe.
For days he tried to crack the lock on the concrete safe, but to no avail. Finally, he called a locksmith, who broke it open.
EvilEnglish says his grandparents were avid collectors, so he knew the safe would be filled with interesting stuff… but he never imagined this.
“This was very out of place since all of the downstairs floorings is hardwood,” he wrote in his first post. “I pushed the carpet back further and saw a round cap with a circular indentation on it. I pulled off the cap and... A Secret Safe!”
The poster also shared that both his grandparents were collectors. “My Grandfather was an avid sportsman and enjoyed collecting various firearms. My Grandmother was a collector of coins and other antiques and curiosities,” he wrote. He stated that he had previously found remnants of his grandfather’s pistol collection in another hidden safe last year.
When a locksmith was finally brought into complete the gnarly task of cracking this corroded old safe box, the family discovered a veritable treasure trove.
Among the findings were pocket watches, soggy money, boxes of jewelry, and dozens and dozens of collectible coins.
Diving back in, he found some old soaked dollar bills and lots more coins. Some coins were exceptionally rare and beautiful. He also found vintage pistols, wristwatches, and a rusted box. Full of tools, perhaps but upon checking in the decrepit box were piles of jewelry...
Also, he found out bars of pure silver! Looks like he came into his own secret fortune, thanks to his amazing grandparents.
A user on the same Reddit forum, who is a coin enthusiast, said that collectors would be very interested in the coins.
But perhaps even more valuable is the memory of his grandparents, who left behind all of these cool things.
“I knew my Grandmother collected coins, but I thought we had found all of them!“ evilenglish captioned one of the photos.
A pipe leak from a few years ago caused a good deal of moisture to seep into the safe, but evilenglish wrote that many of the items were protected by casings from damage. He has since enlisted the help of other Redditors in salvaging the silver coins and preserving their undoubtedly hefty value.
“Funny that as a boy, in that very house, my Grandma read me Treasure Island,” evilenglish wrote. “And I always dreamed of finding something like this!”
