There is no denying that Filipinos are born with a fascinating sense of humor. That's why we love comedy shows. Though Filipino’s taste in entertainment has evolved over the years, many will always love Filipino character comedies. One of the recently famous comedic acts would be that of Wowowin’s ‘DonEkla’, composed of entertainer Donita Nose and Super Tekla.
Romeo Librada, the real Super Tekla, came from a broken family who used to live in the mountains of North Cotabato, Mindanao. Youngest of 8 siblings, Romeo was only 9 months old when his mother passed away. Soon after the tragedy, he was separated from his siblings and was raised by his grandfather.
Life wasn’t easy, making him work hard by harvesting and selling fresh produce to get through high school. Though hard-working and very reliable, Romeo admitted that he realized he was gay when he was just in elementary school. That was also when he started dreaming of becoming a successful singer one day. And when he reached 22 years old, he decided to go to Manila and try pursuing his dreams.
As soon as he arrived at Manila, he became romantically involved with a man for one year, who eventually left him. He claims he was devastated and extremely hurt by his first relationship.
However, he questioned his own sexuality when he met Irene. He developed feelings for her, which blossomed for 10 years. Though they already had a daughter, Irene and Romeo parted ways because of very deep issues within their relationship. Their daughter was left in the care of his mother-in-law.
Tekla started to struggle in life once again, having to work as a construction worker just to make ends meet. He became fond of singing at malls on their videoke machines, which attracted many people because of how good he was. That was when he met Tolits and Jimmy, who would become his “fairy god mothers.” They were the ones who helped him achieve his dreams.
They introduced him to Punchline, a comedy bar along Quezon Avenue in Quezon City. Super Tekla was invited onstage, where he sang Celine Dion’s “Power of Love.” The audience was so impressed by him that he reportedly received tips that amounted to ₱35,000. Sadly, he started using drugs to deal with the pains he had experienced throughout his life.
His co-workers and friends shunned him and told him to stop his vices, which ultimately left him bankrupt. It was until his co-worker from Punchline, Donita Nose, invited him to join ‘Wowowin’—much to his surprise.
When he came to the show, host Willie Revillame and the audiences loved him. He was exceptionally good at making people laugh. As a matter of fact, he was offered to become a host at the show several times, but he claims he didn’t have faith in himself at that time.
Donita Nose was able to persuade him soon—and it was the birth of the comedic duo, DonEkla. He appeared in several GMA shows, making his popularity rise in just a short time. However, just as fast as his fame rose, he soon quickly disappeared from the show for unknown reasons.
Rumors began to spread. They alleged that he was addicted to drugs and gambling. During an interview, he admitted that he was in fact using illegal substances, but promised to change for the better. He also asked for forgiveness from Willie, and asked to be accepted into the show once again. However, his plea fell on deaf ears, as Willie refused to accept him again.
He said that he’s deeply grateful for GMA and despite being removed from “Wowowin,” he is still a Kapuso talent.
